Day 12

Owen was woken up at 8 am. He wasn't thrilled. He had nothing scheduled until 2pm.

He starts school next week and took a tour of the classroom. He is going to need work sent as they appear to only focus on math and LA. He is worried he will be behind but Ms. Mayan helped us out.

Mom called the school to get work sent to him to do here. Owen forgot his mom can problem solve lol so now the work begins lol.

Dad sent in Halo lego to fill in tge boring times. Unfortunately he finished it in 2 hours flat! So much for that. Thank goodness dad is coming in with bro to entertain him this weekend!

Owen managed 12 minutes on the tilt table today. Thats getting much better. He challenged his PT and mom to a game of Blokus. Course he won lol.

We had our first home cooked meal in 2 weeks tonight. Yum. Then mom and Owen played the Simpsons Game of Life! It is very very quiet on the unit so we watched them catch the Boston suspect #2 on CNN. glad thats over.

Day 11- BARB DAY

Today Owen got his first Glenrose visitor..Barb!

He finally got to sleep in today. Mom didn't but she got to have a shower and relax while Owen slept.

Barb came for a visit and then Owen had physio. The tilt table proved to be somewhat difficult today but he learned how to play Blokus! He still can not bear weight on his left leg..

He is looking forward to a pass saturday then family coming on Monday

He also cooked spring rolls and drew on a ceiling tile.

He keeps getting in trouble for being a night owl but mom doesn't make him go to bed until at least 10 pm.

Owen is super excited because he was told he gets to go in the pool twice next week.
Mom got a bit of a break and had an afternoon with Barb while Owen was in physio .

Day 10- getting to know the new home away from home

Owen is in wonderful spirits! He got to go see the pool where he will get some physio today. He also got to get a bone scan- he loves the moving table.

Owens physio therapist and neurologist both came in to say hello .

He had a rough night last night due to the introduction of a zimmer splint which is a whole leg splint used to keep his hamstrings from tightening. However he could not tolerate them so he gets to sleep with sand bags instead. He was much much happier.

He spent much of this day doing artwork and appointments but he managed to make a new friend and spent the evening playing wii together while mom visited with the other moms.

Mom went to the parent group and got to hear from other parents and grand parents and how they cope . Even got to do relaxation exercises. Thats something she needs to do more of.

Tomorrow is BARB day and we get to get groceries  . Yahoo!

Day 9-Transfer to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital

On day 9 Owen got the second ambulance ride in his life, only this time it was just a transfer. Off to Glenrose he went. One hiccup though. Mom had to go in a cab with the wheel chair and due to the rush was 45 minutes behind.

Once there mom had a slight meltdown when she saw the teenie tiny chair bed she would sleep on. Nana promised to fix that in a week when they come to visit and bring a cot.

Owen on the other hand was mighty upset about no sound on his tv.

Once the dust settled and we met the wonderful staff we felt a bit better.

We took a pass after everyone met with us and went shopping and to Owens favorite place, Mcdonalds.

Owen even made a sign for his room and his roomate has the same haircut and personality.

Hooray.

Day 3 to 8 Recovery and the waiting game!

Many many things happened over these days .. a new physio routine which consisted of a tilt table and angry birds, a new and less glamorous way of mobilizing, a few visits to the teen room and many sleepless nights.

Owen was off morphine after the first day post op and only needed tylenol and ibuprofen for pain. What a trooper!

He made arts and crafts and enjoyed the healing garden. He went through 7 room mates all together. Some big. Some small. He met many Doctors and Nurses and he never really knew a plan till the very last day.

Day 2. Operation day

Owen is into surgery and 2 screws are put into his femur to strengthen the bone and prevent further damage.

His surgery went off without a hitch and 75 minutes later he was in his room. He was emotional but that was expected . The DMD did not cause any trouble with anaesthetic and everyone was very grateful. And in came the get well wishes...

Owen loved those

He was unable to bear weight so he became a 2 person lift . His mom taught the nurses how he liked being lifted even though they weren't happy about not using a transfer belt.

And that eve we got roommate #2.

April 8, 2013-Day 1 at th Stollery Childrens Hospital

April 1,2013 Owen broke his femur getting out of the bath tub. We did not find out until April 4 that it was a buckle fracture of the head/neck of the femur.
On April 8 he began his journey in Edmonton to beat the odds and show Muscular Dystrophy who is boss. After all, isn't that what he does best.

On day one he waited anxiously for his surgeon to give word of the surgery time. He sat in the waiting room braving "Dora The Explorer" which he now refers to as his least favorite show in the world.

Once in the room he learned to enjoy the sites of the Stollery and pigged out like a king before his food and drink restrictions began.
